Bernalwood is reporting that Palace Steak House will reopen!

In honor of this news, the Palace Family Steak House band (unrelated to the restaurant) will play it's first show in more than a year at El Rio, just down the street from the Palace Steak House, on September 15.

Wake Up, You Lazy Astronauts!

We submitted the song below for NASA's contest to pick the song that would wake up the astronauts on the final shuttle mission later this year. The public will vote to pick a winner. But NASA didn't even pick this song as one of the ones that could be voted on, which frankly makes me question everything about the space agency.

The song was written by Anu Kirk and Rich Trott with a line or two (and the whole idea of writing a song for the contest) suggested by Jessica Forys. The song is performed by Palace Family Steak House and features the Final Frontiersmen. Performers on the recording are: Anu Kirk, Rich Trott, JP Lester, Joel Primer, and Ted, Kelly, and Greg from the Final Frontiersmen.

"Being Smart" by The Sometimes Larry Band

This morning, my nephew Hugo called and asked if I knew of a song that he could use for a homework assignment. He had chosen the theme being smart does not make you a geek but could not find an appropriate song to write about. He had tried "White and Nerdy" but no luck there. I did some searching and found songs by everyone from Weezer to Brian Wilson about how the singer/songwriter loves smart women, but invariably they include a suggestive phrase here and there.

So, I did what anyone would do: I wrote and recorded a song as quickly as I could. The whole thing took me about a half hour, but I think it came out OK. For whatever reason, I decided this was a demo recording by the until-now non-existent Sometimes Larry Band.

No Hard Feelings, White Stripes

In early April 2007, it was announced right here in this blog that Palace Family Steak House would play at least one show that year in each of the 11 districts represented by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

A few weeks later, the White Stripes announced that their upcoming tour would take them to every province in Canada.

Although nothing was said by the usual places that would uncover the connections between events that seem merely coincidental, we knew what they were thinking. This was like the Doors ripping off the Kinks—these Kinks.

I was reminded of all that last night while watching the documentary about the White Stripes tour, Under Great White Northern Lights. (The movie was presented at San Francisco's Roxie Theater and sponsored by BAGeL Radio—this BAGeL Radio.

I just wanted to take a moment to let Jack and Meg know:

I guess I've been too busy becoming a homeowner and getting engaged to have been on top of the news that the Palace Steak House restaurant has closed!

The band, of course, lives on. More to come soon. For now: In memory of the Palace Steak House, 1969-2009, R.I.P. Thanks for the good times, Moe and Marina!

Joy of Cooking Update: Cheese-Based Appetizers Plus

Quick rundown...

Garlic Cheese Spread: Other than that I didn't hate it as much as I thought I would given the mayonnaise base, I don't remember much about this. This is a sign that I should blog about these things very soon after doing them rather than waiting 6 weeks.

Roasted Garlic And Parmesan Spread: I liked this one. But beyond that, I can't tell you anything. See above.

Pesto Cheesecake: There might have been a small leak in the water bath. This turned out more like a light pesto cheese spread. It was good as a spread, but more work than a spread should be.

Marinated Goat Cheese With Fresh Thyme: Refrigerate a log of goat cheese in some olive oil and some chopped fresh thyme, and you're done. Hard to go wrong.

Marinated Mozzarella: More stuff than the previous recipe, and not as tasty, but again, hard to go wrong.

Fried Mozzarella Sticks: More work than buying them frozen, but it sure is fun to bread stuff and throw it in the Fry Daddy Jr.

Nachos: For real? A recipe for nachos?

Cheese Quesadillas: For real? A recipe for cheese quesadillas? Until I realize that brushing the pan with vegetable oil is what brings the awesome. I used to just put a tortilla in a non-stick pan and go. What an idiot I was! Thank you, Joy of Cooking!

Honey Yogurt Dip: I suspect this is great if you are smart enough not to put it in a blender for too long. I ended up with honey yogurt cold soup.

Crudités: The Tahini Dressing they recommend for dipping really does call out to be placed on a leafy salad instead.

After a Joy Of Cooking hiatus, I did a sprint through Roquefort Cheese Balls (made for a birthday celebration at work), Liptauer Cheese Spread (ditto), Blue Cheese Spread With Walnuts (made for another birthday celebration), and Chutney Cheese Spread (ditto).

I didn't bother blogging about making the Taramasalata because I completely ruined it. I accidentally added many times the rice potatoes called for in the recipe. This was a bit of a shame because there was somewhat of an adventure trying to locate taram. (We ended up getting it at Indus in Berkeley.) Rather than try to make it again, I moved on.

The Cream Cheese Ball (pictured, photo by Humuhumu) fared only slightly better. I made it and tasted one bite, but didn't feel much like eating it after that. Neither did Humu. It ended up in the trash after a few days in the refrigerator.

These two events may be a sign of Joy of Cooking Project burn-out. However, an opportunity to get a recipe out of the way by bringing the result to a special event or party should never be passed up! That brings us to the Cheddar Cheese Ball.

My coworker Kirk does the AIDS Ride every year. This year, we're having a small party at work where people can donate money to the cause or otherwise offer support. I've made a donation and I've made a cheddar cheese ball.

A few nights ago, the Fog City Wrestling Twitter feed offered up a free t-shirt to whomever came up with the best answer to the question, "What's it like to be down with Fog City?"

Here was my answer.

Disclaimers: I recorded it quickly to get it posted in a timely fashion, so it's rough. I didn't have a guitar handy, so all the "guitar" parts are actually played on a bass guitar. I messed up and recorded some stuff stereo that should have been recorded mono, so as a result, there's no "guitar" in the right channel. Do not taunt Happy Fun Ball.
